Large Roll Vortices Exhibited by Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy during Landfall

چکیده

Roll vortices are frequent features of a hurricane’s boundary layer, with kilometer or sub-kilometer horizontal scale. In this study, we found that large roll O (10 km) wavelength occurred over land in Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy (2012) during landfall on New Jersey. Various characteristics were corroborated by analyses Doppler radar observations, 500 m resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulation, an idealized vortex model. The always linear-shaped, their wavelengths 5–14 km generally larger than any previously published for tropical cyclone land. Based surface wind observations simulated WRF fields, significantly increased the probability hazardous winds likely caused observed patchiness treefall Sandy’s landfall.

Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change before U.S. Gulf Coast Landfall

Tropical cyclone intensity change remains a forecasting challenge with important implications for such vulnerable areas as the U.S. coast along the Gulf of Mexico. Analysis of 1979–2008 Gulf tropical cyclones during their final two days before U.S. landfall identifies patterns of behavior that are of interest to operational forecasters and researchers. Tropical storms and depressions strengthen...

The Effect of Tropical Cyclone Characteristics on U.S. Landfall Probability

When a tropical cyclone threatens the coastline, decision makers can take preparatory actions designed to mitigate the damage caused by landfall. Those in this situation must decide whether and when to begin their preparations. Regnier and Harr have developed a dynamic decision model in which the decision maker has the option of delaying preparation and waiting for an updated, more accurate for...

THE INFLUENCE OF LANDFALL VARIATION ON TROPICAL CYCLONE LOSSES IN THE UNITED STATES AS SIMULATED BY HAZUS by KEVIN

Sharp, Kevin Joseph (M.A., Geography) The Influence of Landfall Variation on Tropical Cyclone Losses in the United States as Simulated by HAZUS Thesis directed by Dr. William R. Travis Tropical cyclone losses in the United States have shown an increasing trend since the beginning of the 20 century. This is mainly due to increased exposure along America’s coast. The amount of coastal property at...

Stochastic Simulation Model for Tropical Cyclone Tracks, with Special Emphasis on Landfall Behavior

We consider a spatial stochastic model for the simulation of tropical cyclone tracks, which has recently been introduced. Cyclone tracks are represented as labeled polygonal lines, which are described by the movement directions, translational speeds, and wind speeds of the cyclones in regular six-hour intervals. In the present paper, we compare return levels for wind speeds of historically obse...

Interdecadal variability of tropical cyclone landfall in the Philippines from 1902 to 2005

[1] A dataset of tropical cyclone landfall numbers in the Philippines (TLP) is created from a combination of historical observation records of the Monthly Bulletins of Philippine Weather Bureau and Joint Warning Typhoon Center best-track data for the period of 1902 to 2005. Interdecadal variability of TLP is found to be related to different phases of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and ...
